| Technology |
Landfill leachate ammonia stripper with thermal destruction |
The Challenge
As part of the Gin Drinkers Bay Landfill Restoration project, Swire SITA Waste Services needed a complete ammonia stripping solution for landfill leachate, with influent ammonia concentrations of 4,000 mg/L requiring reduction to a discharge target of 100 mg/L. The project required a full turnkey scope: not just the stripping process itself, but the associated gas handling and destruction infrastructure needed to safely manage the by-products of treatment.
The Solution
Organics Group delivered the complete design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of a 230 m3/day landfill leachate ammonia stripper between 1999 and 2000. The scope covered the full EPC lifecycle: detailed plant design, plant layout design, specification and selection of bought-in components, and the specification, design, build, and supply of all equipment. The installation included a migration gas flare, a fully enclosed thermal destructor, and complete gas handling equipment, all built and supplied within the plant design. Organics Group also carried out installation, start-up, commissioning, and operator training. The plant was later upgraded to a capacity of 480 m3/day in 2002 to meet growing site demand.

Why this project matters
- Demonstrates Organics Group’s full turnkey EPC capability — not just the stripping process, but the complete gas handling and thermal destruction system around it
- More than two decades of proven capacity growth, from 230 m3/day at commissioning to 480 m3/day after the 2002 upgrade
- Shows OTAR®’s ability to scale with a site’s needs post-installation, rather than requiring a full system replacement
- One of Organics Group’s earliest documented Hong Kong landfill ammonia stripping projects, reflecting a long-standing relationship with major waste management operators in the region
