The Challenge
WENT is one of Hong Kong’s largest landfill sites, generating high-strength leachate with ammonia concentrations reaching up to 6,700 mg/L NH4-N. The site required a robust, long-term ammonia treatment solution capable of handling extreme and variable loads without relying on biological treatment alone, which is easily inhibited at this concentration.
The Solution
Organics Group delivered a custom-engineered OTAR® system using Variant 1 — waste heat with thermal destruction — powered by landfill gas already generated on site. The installation has been progressively expanded across five stages since its original 1998 commissioning, scaling alongside the growing landfill rather than requiring replacement.
